Protein gel regrows tooth enamel structure

Researchers at the University of Nottingham developed a protein-based gel that facilitates epitaxial mineralization, allowing new hydroxyapatite crystals to grow in alignment with existing tooth structure. By utilizing calcium and phosphate from saliva, the gel rebuilds the microscopic architecture of enamel rather than just depositing surface minerals.

This approach addresses a fundamental biological limit: enamel lacks living cells and cannot regenerate once lost. While the material shows promise for reducing sensitivity and restoring strength, it remains a laboratory finding with no defined timeline for clinical availability.
