How Earth-sized interferometry images black hole shadows

The Event Horizon Telescope network links radio telescopes globally to function as a single earth-sized lens. This technique, called very-long-baseline interferometry, captures the distinct shadow of a supermassive black hole in M87. The image reveals the event horizon's silhouette against surrounding accreting matter.

This provides direct observational evidence for general relativity in extreme gravitational fields. However, the resolution remains limited, and the image is a reconstruction of radio emissions rather than a standard photograph. It confirms theory but does not yet explain the internal dynamics of the singularity.
