How common anti-inflammatory drugs help viruses spread

Researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology have found that JAK inhibitors, a common class of anti-inflammatory drugs, suppress the immune signaling pathways that normally protect cells from viral attacks. Using organoid models and gene expression analysis, the team showed that drugs like baricitinib reduce the activity of antiviral genes, making it easier for pathogens including influenza, SARS-CoV-2, and adenovirus to infect tissue. The mechanism demonstrates a direct trade-off between dampening chronic inflammation and maintaining baseline cellular defense against pathogens.

This creates a difficult management problem for patients with autoimmune conditions who also face seasonal viral exposure or latent infections. While the laboratory findings clearly map the cellular vulnerability, translating this to clinical practice requires weighing the known benefits of controlling severe inflammation against an increased susceptibility to infection. It is a reminder that broadly suppressing the immune system rarely comes without hidden downstream costs.
