The Persistent Gaps in Hearing Aid Coverage

A study in JAMA Otolaryngology analyzing data from over 50 million people found that while insurance mandates for hearing aids have increased for children, they remain largely absent for older adults. Traditional Medicare does not cover hearing aids, and out-of-pocket costs typically range from two thousand to seven thousand dollars per set. Even among adults living below the federal poverty line, over sixty percent lack guaranteed coverage.

Treating hearing loss matters because unaddressed deficits correlate with cognitive decline and falls, making the cost barrier a public health issue rather than just an expense. However, insurance mandates alone do not capture actual device usage or the quality of care provided after purchase. Policymakers have clear targets for reform, but legislative changes move slowly against entrenched benefit structures.
